Clear Lens Exchange (CLE)

Clear lens exchange surgery is a surgical procedure that aims to replace the natural lens of the eye with an artificial one. This procedure is typically done on patients who have developed cataracts or presbyopia, both of which can cause blurry vision and difficulty reading. The physician uses a clear, intra-ocular lens implant custom-made to correct a person’s glasses prescription, and places it inside the eye. Some of these lens implants may be designed with concentric rings that allow the patient to see near, far, and in-between, to reduce the need for reading glasses.

Clear Lens Exchange May Suit You If—

Reading Glasses Now Rule Your Day

After roughly age 50 the eye’s natural lens has already lost most of its focusing range. Replacing that lens addresses the cause of the problem rather than working around it.

Laser Vision Correction Is Not an Option

Thin corneas, irregular topography, or significant dry eye can rule out LASIK, PRK, and SMILE while leaving a lens-based procedure entirely reasonable.

Your Prescription Sits Outside the Laser Range

Very high farsightedness — and some degrees of nearsightedness — fall beyond what corneal laser surgery can treat safely. A lens-based approach is not limited in the same way.

You Want a One-Time Solution

Because the natural lens is replaced, it cannot later cloud — so this is a procedure you do not expect to revisit.
